The park authority needed a shelter, a small classroom and a place to read the river. The site floods every winter, so the building had to stand above the water rather than beside it.

Floating on four walls

Two concrete walls carry a single deep beam that cantilevers seven metres over the riverbank. Underneath, the water keeps moving; above, the room is silent.

The formwork boards were reused from local fencing, and the concrete includes crushed granite from the excavation. It already looks as if it has always been there.

Use

Open from dawn to dusk, free to all visitors. Over 40,000 people walked through in the first year.
